Breakfast. After an hour drive to Nayapul we then commence our trek to Birethanti, a large and prosperous town beside the Modi River. We head up the main trail to Sudami where we climb gradually up the side of the valley, reaching Hile (1,495 m-4,905 ft) before pushing on to Tirkhe Dhunga. From here the trail crosses a stream and then ascends a steep stone staircase to the large Magar village at Ulleri (2070m-6791ft). 4 hours.
This is a pleasant walking day today. We trek through rhododendron and oak forests and across streams before making a short, final climb to Nangethanti. From Nangethanti we head up to Ghorepani (2,850 m-9,350 ft). 5:30 hours.
In the morning we leave early, walking by torchlight, to climb up to Poon Hill, above the village. We will arrive just before sunrise, to view the entire Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. In fine conditions three of the world’s fourteen 8,000 m-26247 ft peaks can be seen, Dhaulagiri I (8,167 m-2,6795 ft), Annapurna I (8,019 m-26,309 ft) and Manalsu (8,156 m-26,759 ft), along with hundreds of other smaller Himalayan mountains spanning the horizon. To the north we can see the Tibetan border and our route down the Kali Ghandaki Valley, and to the south the rolling hills leading to the border with India. We descend back to Ghorepani for breakfast before heading down the main trail to Chitre where we branch off into terrain that sees few trekkers. We descend through terraced fields to the village of Saunta and on to our first night camping, leaving behind the “popular” trekking routes of the past few days and now branching off largely on our own.
From here we climb to the village school, and then contour west through dwarf rhododendron forest before descending for lunch in a clearing by a small stream. In the afternoon we continue to walk through a forest, ascending gradually and passing through several buffalo grazing pastures to reach a clearing and temporary herders’ settlement known as Chistibung.
To gain the ridge at Kopra, we have a steady climb that soon heads above the tree line. The area is noted for its wildlife and you should keep an eye open for Himalayan Thar and the Danphe Pheasant. The best way to tackle the climb is to ascend steadily, take your time and rest as often as you wish. We will reach the campsite on Kopra Ridge for lunch, to be greeted by the most fantastic views. The extraordinary panorama includes Annapurna South, towering directly above and only six kilometres distant; Fang and Nilgiri are prominent to the north and across the depths of the Kali Gandakhi valley, the Dhaulagiri Himal dominates the entire western skyline.
For those wishing an easier option, a walk high on the ridge will provide fantastic views. Dhaulagiri I and its satellite peaks dominate the western skyline. Annapurna I (8091m-26545ft), Fang (7647m-25089ft), Annapurna South (7237m-23743ft) and Nilgiri North (7061m-23166ft) to the east are separated from the Dhaulagiri Range by the 6,000m-19685ft-deep Kali Gandaki gorge. To the north lies Tukche Peak (6920m-22703ft) and behind it the trans-Himalayan ranges forming the border of Nepal with Tibetan China. To the south, the rolling middle hills slowly disappear into the great plains of India.
From Kopra Ridge we descend, bearing east through small grazing pastures amidst scrub rhododendron. This area is only visited in the monsoon by villagers from Saunta who, with their sheep and buffalo, occupy the small huts and shelters that we frequently pass along the way. After the descent, the trail climbs gradually for the rest of the day, heading for a small notch that leads to the watershed of the Modi Khola valley. Our destination is Dobaato, a small clearing on the ridge with great views towards Annapurna South and Machapuchhare (6993m-22943ft).
A full day descending, as we walk through forest of rhododendron, oak and magnolia. It is essential to keep an eye open for the guides on this part of the trail as the forest in parts is very dense and the trail diverges on many occasions! We will take lunch at Tadapani or Gai Kharkha, the first permanent habitation we have passed for five days. In the afternoon we again descend, at times steeply, to reach the village of Ghandruk. Here we resume using lodge accommodation. This Gurung village is well known for the number of its men folk who have served in the British Gurkha regiments. Our lodge is close to the village and it is well worthwhile spending the rest of the afternoon exploring this beautiful village.
Ghandrung it’s easy walking all downhill to Naya Pul where our trekking ends. 4:30 hours. Drive to Pokhara, O/N at Base camp resort or Hotel Kantipur.
Secnic drive throught the valley and hilly region to Kathmandu and transfers to the hotel.
After breakfast, Transfer into the Airport for departing from Nepal
