To the north we can see the Tibetan border and our route down the Kali Ghandaki Valley, and to the south the rolling hills leading to the border with India. We descend back to Ghorepani for breakfast before heading down the main trail to Chitre where we branch off into terrain that sees few trekkers. We descend through terraced fields to the village of Saunta and on to our first night camping, leaving behind the “popular” trekking routes of the past few days and now branching off largely on our own.

To gain the ridge at Kopra, we have a steady climb that soon heads above the tree line. The area is noted for its wildlife and you should keep an eye open for Himalayan Thar and the Danphe Pheasant. The best way to tackle the climb is to ascend steadily, take your time and rest as often as you wish. We will reach the campsite on Kopra Ridge for lunch, to be greeted by the most fantastic views. The extraordinary panorama includes Annapurna South, towering directly above and only six kilometres distant; Fang and Nilgiri are prominent to the north and across the depths of the Kali Gandakhi valley, the Dhaulagiri Himal dominates the entire western skyline.

  • Day 09: Kopra Ridge Exploration.

For those wishing an easier option, a walk high on the ridge will provide fantastic views. Dhaulagiri I and its satellite peaks dominate the western skyline. To the north lies Tukche Peak (6920m-22703ft) and behind it the trans-Himalayan ranges forming the border of Nepal with Tibetan China. To the south, the rolling middle hills slowly disappear into the great plains of India.

  • Day 10: Dobaato (3,420 m-11,220 ft) Trekking 6½ hrs.

From Kopra Ridge we descend, bearing east through small grazing pastures amidst scrub rhododendron. This area is only visited in the monsoon by villagers from Saunta who, with their sheep and buffalo, occupy the small huts and shelters that we frequently pass along the way. After the descent, the trail climbs gradually for the rest of the day, heading for a small notch that leads to the watershed of the Modi Khola valley. Our destination is Dobaato, a small clearing on the ridge with great views towards Annapurna South and Machapuchhare (6993m-22943ft).

  • Day 11: Ghandruk (1,950 m-6,398 ft) Trekking 6 hrs.

A full day descending, as we walk through forest of rhododendron, oak and magnolia. It is essential to keep an eye open for the guides on this part of the trail as the forest in parts is very dense and the trail diverges on many occasions! We will take lunch at Tadapani or Gai Kharkha, the first permanent habitation we have passed for five days. In the afternoon we again descend, at times steeply, to reach the village of Ghandruk. Here we resume using lodge accommodation. This Gurung village is well known for the number of its men folk who have served in the British Gurkha regiments.
