Mt Makalu Expedition Overview

Mount Makalu at the altitude of 8485 meters is the fifth highest mountain in the world and is situated in the Mahalangur Himalayan range. The expedition to the top of Mount Makalu is, without doubt, an experience that requires careful planning and expert level guidance to complete. Come experience the thrill and adventure of Mt. Makalu was first climbed in 1955 and it still remains an exciting peak to ascend to this day. This impressive mass of red granite has four sharp ridges, making it all the more spectacular. The Mt. The Makalu Expedition is considered a tough one among the eight-thousanders and also falls on the list of one of the most difficult mountains in the world to climb. Hence, needless to state, a perfect physique, strong mindset, and prior climbing experience are mandatory to carry out this experience.  The major highlight of the trek is the top of the summit, which offers spectacular views of the encompassing Himalayas all around.

The Makalu is climbed from its west face and consists of four parts. Aesthetically speaking, mountain Makalu is difficult, yet highly adventurous to reach the summit. With the expertise and help from our experienced climbers and guides, come take up the Mt, Makalu Expedition with pride and complete it safely with the help of Alpine Adventure Trek and Expedition.

The Mt. Makalu Expedition is amalgamated with the classic trek into the Makalu Barun National Park. Explore the wilderness and raw geographical diversity of Makalu region and witness the views of the blissful orchids, forests of rhododendron, juniper, and fir. Trek along the banks of the Arun River and pass through picturesque villages. Come explore the mighty Makalu and ascent its summit with us.

Best Season:

The best time for Makalu expeditions is during the spring season (March to May) and the autumn season (September to November). The weather during these seasons is generally stable, with clear skies and good visibility.

Permits & Regulations:

  1. Makalu Barun National Park Permit: The Makalu Barun National Park is the main entry point for Makalu expeditions. All climbers are required to obtain a permit from the national park office in Kathmandu or at the Makalu Barun National Park entry gate in Num, which is located about 6-7 hours drive from Kathmandu.
  2. Makalu Expedition Permit: Climbers must also obtain a permit from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation in Kathmandu to climb Makalu. This permit is usually issued through a registered trekking agency.
  3. Liaison Officer: All foreign climbers are required to hire a liaison officer from the Nepalese government. The liaison officer’s job is to monitor the expedition and ensure that climbers follow all the regulations.
