Best Season:
The best time for Makalu expeditions is during the spring season (March to May) and the autumn season (September to November). The weather during these seasons is generally stable, with clear skies and good visibility.
Permits & Regulations:
- Makalu Barun National Park Permit: The Makalu Barun National Park is the main entry point for Makalu expeditions. All climbers are required to obtain a permit from the national park office in Kathmandu or at the Makalu Barun National Park entry gate in Num, which is located about 6-7 hours drive from Kathmandu.
- Makalu Expedition Permit: Climbers must also obtain a permit from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation in Kathmandu to climb Makalu. This permit is usually issued through a registered trekking agency.
- Liaison Officer: All foreign climbers are required to hire a liaison officer from the Nepalese government. The liaison officer’s job is to monitor the expedition and ensure that climbers follow all the regulations.
