The Annapurna Massif is once again attracting attention from the international mountaineering community as Japanese climbers Hidesuke Taneishi and Tetsu Hashimoto head into Nepal with an ambitious objective: attempting the First Ascent of Gangapurna West, a 7,140m mountain that remains an Unclimbed Peak in the Annapurna Himal.

Each expedition approached the mountain differently, and each encountered its own set of difficulties.
The first documented attempt came in 2016, when South Korean climbers Kim Chang-ho, Choi Seok-mun and Park Joung-yong attempted the south face.
The team climbed onto the glacier before ascending a south-southwest-facing spur. They established their first bivouac at approximately 5,806m and then climbed steep snow and serac terrain toward a second bivouac around 6,200m.
After spending time studying the complicated glacier terrain above them, the climbers launched their summit attempt early on October 8.
Two members continued toward the summit ridge, while Park Joung-yong stopped because he was insufficiently acclimatized. Kim Chang-ho and Choi Seok-mun climbed several pitches farther and reached the summit ridge.
The summit was only around 100m higher.
However, the climbers decided not to continue without their teammate. They turned around, leaving Gangapurna West without a successful ascent.
The decision illustrates one of the defining characteristics of exploratory mountaineering: reaching a point close to the summit does not necessarily mean continuing is the correct choice. In this case, the team prioritized returning together over completing the summit.
During the same expedition, the Korean climbers also completed a new direct route on the south face of Gangapurna itself.
The following year, Italian climbers Simon Messner and Phillip Pruenster approached Gangapurna West from the north side.
Their planned route began from the Manang Valley, with Base Camp established at approximately 5,000m. Conditions initially appeared favorable, but the mountain carried substantial amounts of snow.
During their first acclimatization climb, the pair encountered snow ranging from knee to hip depth. They reached around 6,000m and decided to camp.
Before they could properly establish their tent, an avalanche swept them some distance. Neither climber was injured, and they spent the night before descending the following day.
After a period of bad weather, they made another attempt and reached approximately 6,200m. Heavy snowfall again became a problem, leaving their equipment wet and forcing them to descend.
Later, Messner returned toward the high camp while Pruenster was ill. When Messner arrived at the campsite, he discovered that their tent had disappeared, apparently swept away by another avalanche.
After searching for approximately two hours without finding it, the expedition was abandoned.
The attempt demonstrated how quickly conditions on a high Himalayan face can turn an apparently manageable route into an objective dominated by snow and avalanche hazards.
The third documented attempt came in 2019, when a seven-member American team led by Jason Kolaczkowski attempted the mountain.
The team planned to follow a modified version of the 2016 Korean route from the southeast spur. The approach was remote, and the team intended to climb without guides or Sherpa support above Base Camp. Asian Trekking provided logistical and Base Camp support.
The expedition eventually reached around 6,200m, but illness, injuries and climbing hazards forced the team to abandon the attempt.
The Himalayan Database records the 2019 expedition as a U.S. expedition on the southeast spur, using the 2016 Korean route.
This became the most recent documented attempt before the Japanese expedition in 2026.
